Registration
Registration is required for all of the Center's educational classes. Members may call to register for free classes only. For all classes that charge a fee, members are required to come to the Center and pay the fee to reserve their place in the class. Payment may be made by mail; clearly indicate which class you are registering for. Cancellations may be made by phone; however, classes with a fee require a 7-day advance notice to ensure a full refund.

Learn to Knit
Every Wednesday

Instructor: Veronica Houston
The "Knit & Pearlers" knitting club is inviting all members to join their group. They will teach any beginner how to knit or crochet for free! Some yarn is provided. all you need to do is buy your own needles. Come and visit with the club and learn more about how you can make beautiful creations of scarves, hats, afghans, and more. The Knit & Pearl Knitting club also does tremendous community service work, making scarves and hats for the homeless, baby hats for the hospitals, and much more. Honor Flight Stories

Join the Center of Active Generations as we honor and hear from the men and women of South Dakota who have been able to go on this memorable trip. Center members will be on hand to share their experiences, and we will also sow pictures from the trip taken by the Honor Flight Committee. We will be taking a free-will offering as a small fundraiser to give the group in hopes of helping other World Ware II Veterans take this important trip. If you are a member who has taken this trip and would like to give a five-minute talk about your experiences we will welcome your input. Cost: Free-will offering. Registration deadline: July 6
 
Sioux Falls Drive-Ins

Drive-in restaurants had their beginning in 1921 in Dallas, Texas, at a little cafe called The Pig Stand, where servers began hopping onto the running boards of cars coming into the parking lot. These servers eventually became known as "car hops" and the era of the drive-in restaurant with car hops providing curb-side service was born. Crusin' Cuisine takes a nostalgic look at several early drive-ns of Sioux Falls, including The Barrell, Bob's, The  Cottage, Dal-Ray, Herbert's, Cutler's, Kirk's, Lee's, Ray's, and Rickey's. Relive times gone by with images and artifacts from these city hot spots.
 
The Good Old, Bad Old Days

This is a great opportunity to come and reminisce about the "good old bad old days" and share some living history. Jackie Carpenter will be here from the South Dakota Wheat Council in her prairie outfit and bring back the memories of making bread from scratch. She will discuss and show how they ground the wheat and rolled the dough.
 
Play Like a Girl - The History of Girls' Basketball in South Dakota

The world of women's athletics has come a long way over the course of a century. Join South Dakota Public Broadcasting as we examine the evolution of high school girls' basketball. memorable coaches and players help tell the intriguing tale of one of our state's most beloved games. From the early teams of the 1900s to enduring a 50-year ban on girls' tournaments, and establishing world-class high school teams, watch and learn what it means to "Play Like a Girl." On hand for this video presentation and question and answer session will be Rinna Bellew with SDPB; Judy Jasper, coach from Washington High School for over 20 years; and the Center's own Lisa Howard, who played at Freman High School from 1976 - 1981.
 
Nonfiction: Writing Your Memoirs
2 Thursdays, July 22 & 29 - Room 202
Instructor: Dave Evans
Join Center member and accomplished writer, Dave Evans, as he takes you on a fun journey to explore writing your own memoirs.

The class will take a look at a few examples of nonfiction/memoirs in the first class, and then be assigned a writing project to be discusses in the second class. Participants may choose one of many possibilities to focus on in their writing. For example: descriptions or narratives on landscapes, places, animals, people they've known or know (perhaps a family member). or they can write about specific events or experiences that they've learned from and grown from something that has changed them in some way. The instructor will emphasize straightforward concise, concrete writing that calls up images for readers.

Navigating the Senior Housing Maze
Wednesday, July 28 at 10: am in Room 202
Presenter: Jenny Bruan
Join Jenny Braun with Simply Senior Transitions as she advises you on navigating the senior housing maze. She will talk about all the housing options from nursing homes to senior apartments and beyond, along with senior services such as hospice and home health care. We will give descriptions on each service or housing option, what is provided, what is not, and the approximate cost of each. Steve Norfolk with Norfolk Financial will come in toward the end and talk about how to fund these options and how long-term care insurance will help to not deplete assets. This will be very informative if you are looking to make a move or needing extra services.

Join Jason Honey as he discusses how retirement living can provide you with the best seats in senior housing. he will discuss the benefits of living in a community vs. staying in your home too long. Everything from financial affordability to great dining experiences and awesome events are just some of the things he will cover as he relates moving to an independent living community to getting tickets to the front row.

AARP Safe Driving Class
Tuesday, August 24 - Room 202
Presenter: AARP

Cost: $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers.
Need to tune up your driving skills? Even the most experienced drivers can benefit by taking a refresher course through the AARP Driver Safety Program. Evaluate your current driving abilities, learn how the aging process can affect you behind the wheel, and get current on the rules of the road. Completion of the course may even qualify an individual for a discount on their car insurance with some companies. The one-session course will be held at the Center. Registration is required as seating is limited. Call 335-0780 to register.

Sanford High Noon Seminar - Eating Well: Tips for Success

Roger A. Shewmake, PhD. LN, professor and director of the nutrition program at Sioux Falls Family Medicine Residency Center for Family medicine will discuss and explore the best choices for healthy foods. Food choices may seem overwhelming and confusing. Dr. Shewmake will present solutions to help with those choices and answer your questions about the relationship of food and health.

Poetry Writing 101

Dave Evans is back. This time he'll show you how to write some amazing poems. Dave will provide some examples of poems and then the participants will choose to write on a particular theme. Ideas include: nature, person poem, object or landscape, mortality, revelations and more. Explore the world of peotry and push yourself to explor new ways to write.
