Cardio exercise: How Much? How Often? For most elderly individuals, the American College of Sports Medicine and the Center for Disease Prevention recommend exercising daily at a low to moderate intensity or 3-5 times per week at moderate to high intensity. The goal is 30 minutes of continuous exercise, and up to 60 minutes. If you are just beginning a cardio exercise program, have severe chronic disease, or a very low fitness level, start with 5 minutes of low-to-moderate activity. Your goal is to work your way up to a moderate-to-vigorous level that increases your breathing and heart rate. It should feel somewhat difficult to you, but not painful. You can still achieve general health benefits with sessions no less than 10 minutes at a time, as long as they add up to a total of at least 30 minutes on most or all days of the week.
