Two New Day Break Programs!
Several months ago, we had the good fortune to have Jason Freeman come to us with a new type of exercise called laughter yoga. Jason shared with me that hearty group laughter undoes the effect of stress by reducing stress-related hormone and peptide levels. It releases endorphins that create a positive state of mind and boost optimism, self-confidence and feelings of self worth, and it also provides an excellent cardio and mind-body workout. How does laughter yoga work? Since anyone can laugh spontaneously without
jokes, humor, or comedy, groups begin laughing as an exercise. Then yogic breathing is combined with clapping and other fun exercises. All exercises are playful, full of child-like innocence and laughter. Soon everyone is laughing creating an electric and positive atmosphere. Jason is a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader and offers his time to Day Break once a week. Thank you Jason! The other new program is offered through Dow Rummel Village. They will lead a Swimming Pool Exercise Class at their facility for Day Break participants. The class is currently free to our participants and will be limited to 5 participants with 2 Day Break staff accompanying them. Dow Rummel will provide the transportation to and from their facility and the class will be led by their Wellness Instructor with assistance from the Day Break staff as needed. This is an excellent opportunity for our participants to receive a low impact water workout. The only thing our participants need to bring is swimming gear and a towel. Thank you Dow Rummel for providing this opportunity to us!

What is Day Break?  In 1983 concerned citizens and agencies providing services to older adults established Day Break, an Adult Day Services Program. This program was first housed in the Bergland Center in downtown Sioux Falls. It remained there until the new facility was built in 1997.

Day Break is a program that bridges the gap between independent living and long term care. Our mission is to extend the opportunity for independent living and provide an alternative to institutional care for caregivers. Adult day care provides a safe, home-like and stimulating environment for your loved one. It can also provide a much needed respite for the caregiver burnout. We believe that Day Break increases the quality of life not only for the individual who participates, but also for his/her caregiver. Day Break provides peace of mind for the caregiver, respite, nursing care, activities and more, and alternative to nursing home placement.

Day Break serves individuals age 18 and over with dementia, Alzheimer's type dementia, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, MS, strokes, depression, individuals at risk of social isolation, and individuals in need of supervision, nutrition and assistance with ADLs and/or care. If you know someone with cognitive impairments who might wander away from home, please contact Molly at 336-6751 to learn about Project Lifesaver.

The State Department of Social Services, Adult Services and Aging certifies our program. It is through this office that we receive federal funding (III-B money) for our program through the Older Americans Act. This funding is available for anyone over the age of 60 who does not live in assisted living, a nursing home, a group home, or foster care. Additional funding for our program comes through the United Way, fundraising, and program contributions.

The cost for our program is based on an individual's age and where they reside. For individuals who are III-B eligible, we are able to bill the State of South Dakota $4.91 per hour toward the cost of the program. Our actual cost to provide the service is $8.00/hour. We ask the individual or caregiver to make a monthly contribution to the program to offset the difference between what we receive from the State and what it actually costs to provide the service.

For individuals under the age of 60, or those who live in an institutional setting, the cost of the program is $8.00/hour. Some funding may be available through the Department of Social Services, Adult Services and Aging through the Title 19 Waiver Program, the Long Term Care Alternative Program, or Respite Program. We have a contract with the VA that also may be a potential source of funding for Veterans. The Day Break Director will be able to help families with appropriate referrals for funding.

Our program offers a variety of services and activities, which includes a structured day filled with activities that are designed to meet a person's physical and mental abilities. Nursing services, social services, therapy services, lab services, and help with oral care, toileting, walking, and meal setup are available through our program. Additional services available for a fee include showers and nail care.

We serve a delicious, hot meal daily in addition to juice in the morning and an afternoon snack. Diabetic and special diets are accommodated. For those over 60 years of age, the suggested meal donation is $3.00. The actual cost is $5.50 per meal.

To enroll in the program, an intake assessment must be completed to ensure that we are able to meet an individual's needs. Those who require extensive nursing care, one-to-one assistance, are physically or verbally abusive, or who wander excessively are not appropriate for the program. The intake will need to be scheduled with the program director and nurse. Approximately one and a half hours are needed for the intake assessment and paperwork.

We are open Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Saturday hours are available by reservation only.  Family, friends, or Paratransit provides transportation to and from the program. The Program Director or Nurse can provide assistance with the Paratransit application. The cost per one-way ride is $1.50.

Our staff includes a full-time Program Director, Nurse, and Activity Coordinator. We have 3 full-time Program Assistants who facilitate the activities and provide much of the daily care. The current enrollment in the program is 50 with an average daily attendance of 25.

Once a person is enrolled in the program, they can attend as often as they like.  Scheduled attendance also guarantees their "spot" on the days that are desired. Unfortunately, we may need to curb enrollment on certain days when our census is high.

Visits to our program are strongly encouraged at any time! We also are happy to provide references regarding our program from current and past participants or caregivers. Thank you for your interest in Day Break! We hope we can assist you in some way.
