Adventures of Workers on Wheels

What a wonderful year 2008 will be! Workers on Wheels will start its fifth year. To date, our volunteers have completed 2700 jobs and rides for senior citizens in need.

I am very excited about The Center For Active Generations' 40th anniversary. We have all had a great time delving into our past and seeing what went on these last 40 years. I have received journals written by Bob Ward, the director in 1968. He faced many of the same issues in his work for seniors: center membership, meaningful activities, nutrition, fitness and transportation, as well as public policy, city issues, media relations (back then I believe it was called "fielding the press"!), health and safety concerns, and community outreach. It is very interesting to see how some things have really changed and some have not!

December 2007

A note of thanks for the many people who came to my house this morning and raked the leaves. They were a great group. I talked to and thanked each one for a job well done, as they had cake and coffee when the job was completed -- plus great conversation! Growing old does have its advantages (ha)!

December 2007

I just wanted to say thanks again for the service you all give me and I am sure to so many more seniors. i thank the Lord for the rides I get. i would not be able to take a cab to my appointments an when family can't help, this service is really a lifesaver. Thank you to all and may God bless you all."

September 2007

I was feeling so low. I felt that I didn't matter to anyone. Then my WOW driver, Al, showed up to take me to the doctor. Al just didn't show up, he arrived in his vintage convertible - top down, of course. I rode tot he doctor in style and it lifted my spirits so much that I was inspired to write and tell you about it.

A story from Rake the Town 2006

Last year a volunteer told me that she and her sons began raking at a home and the resident was not there. No sooner had they started than the gentleman pulled into the driveway; but the volunteer was worried that the man did not get out of his car. She went over to him and she saw that he was crying. He told her that he had just gotten out of the hospital and that he was overwhelmed with gratitude when he pulled up to see the volunteers working in his yard.

June 2007

I am so grateful for services from my WOW volunteer. I honestly don't know what I would do if I had to pay for this repair and there are so many tasks I can no longer do.

Dear Kristen,
I received your letter confirming volunteers would come to my home to rake next weekend. After the last wind we had you can't believe all of these long needles that filled my yard from the pine trees. There is no way I would ever be able to rake all these up by myself.
I just want you to know how much I appreciated what you have put together for me. The time you took to come out to see me and for being so kin. It's nice to know there are such caring people out there.
Before you came along, I didn't know what I was going to do about my yard. I couldn't even walk.
You mentioned there might be someone who could help me around the house later on. I've been sitting here for months wondering how I would ever get these things done also. You took such a load off my mind and I dearly thank you for that.
I am getting better and I am starting to walk on my foot a little. Now, if the doctors can fix my back, I would be really happy. I am happy anyway -- just need to get rid of the pain.
Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for caring.
