Rake the Town 2010

October 29 & 30

Volunteers

Needed

Rake the Town is a community wide event to help the elderly who are physically unable to rake themselves and can't afford to hire someone to do their yard work. Rake the Town is beneficial to senior homeowners who want to remain independent in their own home but need a little extra help with chores. Our community benefits from the beautification of the neighborhood and the volunteers benefit from the rewarding experience of working together to help those in need. Rake the Town is the perfect one time only volunteer opportunity that really makes a difference here in Sioux Falls!

We are looking for at least 850 volunteers that enjoy raking and spending time helping others. We welcome groups, individuals, families, sports teams, students, scouts, service clubs, etc. Lawn bags are provided but volunteers are asked to bring their own rakes. Children are welcomed if accompanied an adult.

Workers On Wheels
Workers on Wheels provides assistance to homeowners over the age of 60 with low and moderate income who do not have family members available to help with household chores. Workers on Wheels will provide services such as light housekeeping, yard work, minor repair services, transportation for doctor appointments, and grocery shipping. All these services are provided at no charge by volunteers who donate their time and talents to enable our clients to continue living independently in their homes.

WOW is supported by the Sioux Empire United Way and administered through The Center For Active Generations. Our mission is to assist the elderly in remaining in their homes. WOW volunteers provide practical, non-emergency assistance to seniors who are unable to pay for services and are physically unable to do the work themselves. Volunteers are screened and trained. There are no fees for services, but care receivers are asked to pay for any supplies as needed. Care receivers may donate to Workers on Wheels. if they wish. Call LaRae Clausen, the WOW coordinator, at 333-3317.

WOW services are based on eligibility of the client and the availability of workers. WOW is unable to provide emergency or crisis services.

WOW volunteers offer caring assistance to people in need, under the direction and supervision of the WOW staff. Currently there are volunteers in the Sioux Falls, Brandon, Lennox and Dell Rapids area available to help seniors in need in those communities. If you or someone you know needs our assistance, or if you would like to volunteer, please contact Workers on Wheels office at 333-3317.

Why volunteer? People volunteer for a variety of reasons; most common is the desire to help others. Most of us will need some type of help at some point in our lives. Many volunteers say they volunteer now while they are the person with the ability to help, but tomorrow they may be the person in need of a kind hearted volunteer.

Volunteering is also the perfect way to develop new skills or discover a new talent. Employers are interested in well-rounded people and often encourage their employees to volunteer and be active in the community. We cannot guarantee volunteering will help you advance in your career but we can guarantee it will bring you a great deal of personal satisfaction.

Be a good role model to your children, pass along your values, have fun together, spend quality time together, build shared memories, give back to the community, cheer up others. (Why We Do What We Do - Letters from Clients)

HELP!LINE
Other volunteer opportunities are available at the HELP!Line Center.
Get connected and get answers by dialing 211 or visiting the HELP!Line Center's web page at www.volunteersolutions.org/volhelp.

Care Callers
This program is designed as a reassurance program for homebound seniors. There is NO CHARGE for this service. The purpose of the call is to assist the older adult in remaining in their home for as long as possible and continue to feel secure. Volunteer callers call clients each morning at a designated time. If the client does not answer the phone emergency procedures are begun. Clients must have an emergency contact ready before being put on this program. If you would like to have a volunteer call you, contact Lisa at the Center: 333-3307.

Carrier Alert
USPS HomepageThis program is similar to the telephone program with the US Postal Carriers as our partners. After a client is signed up, a sticker is put in their mailbox that signifies to the postal carrier that person is on the program. If mail accumulates in the mailbox, the carrier then knows that there may be an emergency and calls the Center. A Center staff person then calls the client to check on them and make sure everything is OK. If needed, the client's emergency contact is called.

Get your snow shoveled!
Call the HELP!Line at 211 and sign up for the "Scoop It" program during snowfalls. The "Scoop-It" program to low-income or disabled persons who are unable to shovel their own snow. Eligible persons must live within the Sioux Falls city limits, must be elderly or disabled and unable to afford to pay someone to shovel their walks, or have no other means of getting the snow shoveled (ie) family, neighbors, etc. Those interested in receiving this service must complete an application form, available by calling 211 or 339-4357. To be put on the list, dial 211 or 339-4357 when it stops snowing. You must call the HELP!Line after each snowfall to place your name on the list again. The 211 HELP!Line is available 24 hours a day. The snow removal crew will be out to shovel within 48 hours. Only driveways and sidewalks will be shoveled - no decks, roofs, cleaning off cars, etc.
