WOW - Workers On Wheels
Workers On Wheels, WOW, is a
senior services program supported by the Sioux Empire United Way and
administered through The Center For Active Generations. Our Mission is to assist
the frail elderly in remaining in their homes by providing light maintenance,
help with chores, transportation and repair services free of charge. WOW's
services are based on client eligibility and availability of volunteers. WOW
cannot provide emergency or same-day service.
The Center for Active Generations is pleased to announce that the Workers on
Wheels (WOW) program is growing even stronger. WOW volunteers are committed more
than ever to help improve the community by assisting senior citizens with
household tasks and repairs. WOW services are based on
eligibility of client and the availability of workers. WOW is unable to provide
emergency or crisis services.
Over 90 individual volunteers, as well as community services groups from Augustana College, Epiphany Youth (Minnesota) and the Crossing have completed
more than 1900 jobs since the program began in 2004. These jobs include yard
work, deep cleaning, errand-running, transportation, minor carpentry, painting
and plumbing work, hauling, packing and household organizing and much more! If
you or someone you know needs help with organizing, sorting and pitching, please
give WOW a call.
Supported with funds raised through the Sioux Empire United Way and administered
through The Center for Active Generations in Sioux Falls, WOW's mission is to
help the frail elderly in remaining in their homes by providing light
maintenance, chore assistance, and repair services. WOW volunteers offer caring
assistance to people in need, under the direction and supervision of the WOW
staff. Currently there are volunteers in the Sioux Falls, Brandon, Lennox and Dell
Rapids area available to help seniors in need in those communities. If you or
someone you know needs help, or if you would like to volunteer, please give WOW
a call at 333-3317.
WOW
volunteers provide practical, non-emergency assistance to seniors who are unable
to pay for services and are physically unable to do the work themselves.
Volunteers are screened and trained. There are no fees for services, but Care
Receivers are asked to pay for any supplies as needed. Care Receivers may donate
to Workers on Wheels if they wish. If you have any questions, call Katie
Fiech,
the Workers on Wheels Coordinator, at 333-3317.
WOW -
Why volunteer? Be a good role model to your children, pass along your values,
have fun together, spend quality time together, build shared memories, give back
to the community, cheer up others.

Care Callers
This program is designed as a reassurance program for homebound seniors. The
purpose of the call is to assist the older adult in remaining in their home for
as long as possible and continue to feel secure. Volunteer callers call clients
each morning at a designated time. If the client does not answer the phone
emergency procedures are begun. Clients must have an emergency contact ready
before being put on this program. If you would like to have a volunteer call
you, contact the Center at 336-6722.
Carrier Alert
This program is similar to the telephone program with the US Postal Carriers
as our partners. After a client is signed up, a sticker is put in their mailbox
that signifies to the postal carrier that person is on the program. If mail
starts accumulating in the mailbox, the carrier then knows that there may be an
emergency and calls the Center. The Center staff person then calls the client to
check on them and make sure everything is OK. If needed, the client's emergency
contact is called.
Get your snow shoveled!
Call the Helpline at 211 and sign up for the "Scoop It" program during
snowfalls. The "Scoop-It" program serves low-income elderly and disabled persons
living within the Sioux Falls city limits who are unable to shovel their walks
themselves or pay someone to shovel for them. People can be put on the list to
receive help by simply calling the HELP!Line Center at 211 or 339-4357 after a
snowfall. It's best to call after the snow has stopped falling. The snow removal
crew will be out to shovel within 48 hours. They only shovel driveways and
sidewalks (no decks or roofs; no cleaning off cards, etc). A person must contact
the HELP!Line Center after each snowfall to have their name put on the list
again. Call Amy Nelson at the HELP!Line Center at 274-1412 if you have
questions.
