This group meets on the 1st Thursday of each month from 12 noon to 1:00
pm in the conference room, Room 128.
Contact Molly at 336-6751 for information about caregivers and the caregivers sharing group.
In "Care Advantage", Fall 2005 vol. 2 no. 1,
cites several pointers for caregivers to be aware of just in case an unplanned
emergency arrives.
Although this magazine is focused upon the care needs of
persons afflicted with dementia or Alzheimer's type dementia, the information
can be
universal for anyone in a care giving role.
- Monitor and meet basic needs: sleep, water,
food, hygiene, environment
- Address medical issues: administer needed
medications, monitor for new health problems
- Get in touch with your loved one's physician:
effective communication in an emergency is crucial
- Keep calm: a person with dementia or other
illness will pick up on your behavior
- Have copies of insurance cards, medication
lists, legal documents, and important contact numbers in a safe place as
copies elsewhere
as well (such as with a family member)
These seem like simple ideas, but in a situation
of crisis these items can make the difference between managing well and getting
through a difficult situation.
